I love reading. As a kid, it was one of my favorite things to do. Even now, I’m still reading and even writing my own books. One way we review books we’ve read in the classroom is with Reading Comprehension games.
Reading Comprehension in Second Grade
In 2nd grade, we read fairy tales and fables. Many, many different versions of classic fairy tales like the Chinese or Native American Cinderella. I would print eBooks (find out how here) and send them home with students in their bagbooks (make your own bagbooks here). Most of the time, I would read them aloud in class or we’d watch videos of others reading them. Afterwards, we’d discuss the text, usually asking questions about the story.

New Approach to Comprehension
After reading, reviewing the story always followed. To change the pace, I would play one of my reading comprehension mini games. The games are very simple to use and can be operated by anyone, students and teachers alike. I’d load up the game on my Smartboard and ask away. There are 10 questions in each game and they ask the basic questions:
-Who are the characters?
-Where does the story take place?
-Why did the author write this story?
You click on the “Answer” button to reveal the answer, then click on the “board” button to go back to the scoreboard to select another questions. Continue on until all questions have been answered.

These Games are Editable!
A good thing about these games is that they are editable! That’s right. There are so many different versions of classic fairy tales and fables that having editable reading comprehension resources are a must, especially in this digital age. You can add, change, or delete your own questions.

These Games are Digital!
Another good thing about these games: they are digital. Having paper and pencil is great, but digital is even better! After editing the game, you can send it to your students for a homework assignment or as extra practice. You can also turn them into task cards (find out here).
