Working with fractions can be tough. I admit though, it’s my favorite math topic! But for students, it can be hard. One topic that’s the hardest is working with unlike fractions. When passing out worksheets, students would dread it. Adding and subtracting unlike fractions can be a hassle. Luckily for you (and them), I found a fun way to make it easier!

Introducing the Smiley-Face method! Using this method, not only does it make adding and subtracting unlike fractions easier, but it adds a bit of fun and color to the topic. The process is simple too!

1: First, Circle and connect the denominators. This is your mouth and eyes.

2: Second, Make an “X” between the two circled numbers and multiply them. Here is your nose.

3: Third,  Cross multiply the numerators and denominators. Move the new numbers over to the like fractions.

4: Last, add or subtract the fractions. Simplify as always!

Simple and effective. Moreover, Students love to color and using this method with unlike fractions will help them. Try using it with the steps in a different color.
